Baby Shower Timeline & Planning Guide
Baby showers have a natural rhythm: arrive, eat, play games, open gifts, eat cake, go home. But without a timeline, the "open gifts" portion alone can eat 90 minutes and leave no time for anything else.
Classic Baby Shower Timeline (2.5 hours)
- 1:00 PM — Guests arrive, sign guest book, mingle
- 1:20 PM — Welcome + lunch/brunch served
- 1:50 PM — Game #1 (baby bingo, guess the baby food, etc.)
- 2:10 PM — Game #2 (diaper raffle drawing, name suggestions)
- 2:25 PM — Gift opening
- 3:00 PM — Cake + dessert
- 3:15 PM — Thank-yous, favors, group photo
- 3:30 PM — Guests depart
Co-Ed Baby Shower Timeline
- 3:00 PM — Guests arrive, drinks + appetizers
- 3:30 PM — Backyard games (cornhole, trivia)
- 4:15 PM — Food served (BBQ, tacos, etc.)
- 5:00 PM — Gift opening
- 5:30 PM — Cake + gender reveal (optional)
- 5:45 PM — Wind down
Timing Tips
- Keep it under 3 hours. The guest of honor is likely uncomfortable (literally). Don't drag it out.
- Gift opening strategy. Have someone next to the parent-to-be writing down gifts and givers. Open the big items first — strollers and car seats take 5 minutes to unwrap.
- Games: quality over quantity. Two well-chosen games beat five mediocre ones. Pick games that involve everyone, not just the loudest person in the room.
- Serve food early. People drove to get there, they're hungry. Don't make them wait an hour for tiny sandwiches.
Planning a gender reveal party too? Or check out the bridal shower timeline if you're coordinating both events.
