Most baby showers run 2–3 hours, which is enough time for guests to arrive, enjoy food, play 2–3 games, watch gifts open, and say goodbye without anyone feeling exhausted. Going longer than 3.5 hours tends to drag, especially for the guest of honor in the third trimester.
Open gifts after games and food are done — typically about 60–75 minutes into the shower. This gives all guests time to arrive before the main event and ensures the gift opening doesn't interrupt the food service. Have a designated helper to collect cards and write down who gave what for thank-you notes.
Two to three games is the sweet spot. One game during the first 30 minutes helps break the ice as guests arrive; one or two more before gift opening keeps energy up. More than three games starts to feel like a game show and leaves less time for actual conversation and connection.
Late morning (10:30 AM–1 PM) is the most popular window — it works naturally for a brunch or light lunch format, guests aren't tied up with evening plans, and the guest of honor typically has the most energy earlier in the day. Weekend afternoons (2–5 PM) are a solid second choice if guests are traveling from out of town.
